Two men charged separately for defacing, removing elections posters during GE
SINGAPORE — A man was charged with defacing People’s Action Party (PAP) posters, while another was charged for removing Progress Singapore Party (PSP) posters on Wednesday (25 November).
Both men committed their offences amid the Singapore General Election campaigning period in late June and early July this year.
Lim Song Huat, a 48-year-old Singaporean, was handed three charges related to defacing the three PAP posters on 3 July between 9.30am and 9.47am.
He allegedly tore two posters off a lamp post along the service road of Woodlands Street 13, and used a black pen to draw a horizontal line across a third poster in the same area.
Lim is set to plead guilty on 7 January.
Removing PSP posters from lamp posts
Separately, a 51-year-old Singaporean, Constantine Paul, was handed two charges of removing opposition party’s PSP posters displayed on separate lamp posts along Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 on 30 June.
Constantine is said to have pulled down the two posters at around 8pm.
He is expected to return to court on 7 January to plead guilty.
In response to a query from Yahoo News Singapore, PSP Assistant Secretary General Francis Yuen said, "The case is in the courts now and we're letting this matter take its due course”.
Lim and Constantine’s alleged offences are breaches of the Parliamentary Elections (Election Advertising) Regulations, which prohibit the alteration, removal, destruction, obliteration or defacement of any poster or banner displayed in accordance with the regulations.
If convicted, each of them may be jailed up to a year or fined up to $1,000.
