Twitter has mixed reactions to non-essential shops reopening

Today's the day, folks: non-essential shops are officially open again in the UK, marking the next step in lockdown restrictions easing. While you might be planning to make your way to your local high street in the coming days or postponing in-store visits for the foreseeable future, some eager shoppers queued outside bricks and mortar stores from the early hours of this morning to make sure they were some of the first through the doors.

As you might expect, the internet is awash with thoughts/feelings/emotions about shops reopening, with Oxford Street and retailers like Primark, TK Maxx, JD Sports, Debenhams and Waterstones currently trending on Twitter.

For those playing at home, unlike other major retailers with significant online offerings, TK Maxx and Primark are primarily in-store shopping experiences. Debenhams, however, has reopened for its closing down sale (SOB) and, well, Oxford Street looks a little different to how it did pre-pandemic, with the iconic Topshop store now closed.

Many have expressed their excitement to be back in stores once more, urging each other to socially distance and keep safe:

"Primark workers today.....God speed!...but seriously, be safe #primark"

"Pubs, gyms and non-essential shops all reopening today. Best of luck to anybody who works in those industries. Let’s hope this is the day our country has finally turned the tide on COVID for good and the lockdowns are behind us"

"Can’t believe I’m stuck in Zoom calls all morning when I could be in TK Maxx."

"Primark employees at 7:59 #primark"

"#bookshopsareback #bookshopsareopen Can't wait for my visit to @Waterstones What book/s should I buy first? I need help deciding..."

"Primark workers when they get a text from their boss at 5am saying there are people queuing outside the shop: #april12th"

Others, however, have expressed concern about the length of queues outside major shops, and said they'd rather avoid the rush:

"the scenes at oxford street today is going to be crazy, aint no way im going shopping anytime soon"

"...full disclosure, I'm not going to TK Maxx today (I've never liked crowds and I've only got worse about it) but MY GOD I WANT TO."

"non essential stores open today and i’m definitely avoiding oxford street"

"TK Maxx and IKEA. Soon**When I have a day booked off work and hopefully it will be quieter."

Ultimately, whether you visit non-essential shops is totally up to
