On Tuesday, news broke that the Twilight star had been cast as the late royal in the project, which will be directed by Pablo Larraín.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the former ELLE cover star will ‘portray Diana as she decides, during her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, to leave her marriage to Prince Charles’.
However, it seems that some Twitter users are less than impressed with the filmmakers’ casting of Stewart.
I'm convinced there is a conspiracy with #KristenStewart— Cheezy Crackers (@CrackersCheezy) June 18, 2020
so strange that she always gets these big roles but they always flop and never lives up to them.
I always feel like shes being pushed and forced upon us, she hasn't ever stood out in anything. #PrincessDiana #conspiracy
kristen stewart playing princess diana......... pls don't disrespect every1's mum's best friend like that 😭— • (@ariiiiiii18) June 18, 2020
I love me some #KristenStewart but this is a bit suspect. I hope she does this role justice because this is potentially a career breaking move. Diana was a world renowned woman and KS better do this role the justice it deserves!!! https://t.co/R2td1KmovP— Tavagné (@aweedtumble) June 18, 2020
I think we could have done Diana a bit better. Kristen Stewart... two words. Her. Acting. 🙄 oof🤦🏾♀️ https://t.co/Azkv9MMvg4— Destiny🌹 (@MsDHenderson) June 18, 2020
Of course, not all the reactions were negative. The actress’ new role did receive some praise from her loyal fans, with several noting her success in films such as Seberg (2019) and Personal Shopper (2018).
As a longtime #KristenStewart stan, she can absolutely convey the subtle emotion we see when rewatching Princess Di's interviews, I'm like the only person pumped for this I swear https://t.co/2toRA2MjIg— Alexandra Kelley (@not_amazn_alexa) June 18, 2020
Um ... So Kristen Stewart is set to play Princess Diana? Um... Yes, I am here for it!!! The world has been sleeping on K-Stew talent for real. Seberg? Personal Shopper? Time for her to *cough* sparkle!! 😅😃😉. Honestly, I want to witness this #KristenStewart #PrincessDiana pic.twitter.com/3B7fOShatW— 𝚂𝚞𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚡 𝚁𝚘𝚢𝚊𝚕 𝙿𝚛𝚒𝚖𝚎 (@Sussex_Prime_1) June 17, 2020
If I see one more hate tweet about Kristen Stewart being cast as Princess Diana, I WILL set this app on fire— jaclyn (@1jaclynng) June 18, 2020
The backlash is similar to the criticism Stewart’s ex boyfriend and former Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson recently received after he was cast as the new Batman.
In response to some fans' indignation, Pattison told Time Out in January: ‘I'm only worried about if people like it when it's done. Right now, people can think what they want.’
Stewart follows in the footsteps of Naomi Watts who also played Princess Diana in the film Diana in 2013.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar in 2014, Watts opened up about her reasons for taking up the role and the critical acclaim it failed to receive (it has an eight per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes...).
‘I got seduced by the fantastic character,’ Watts told the publication. ‘Diana did a lot of things that had positive and negative results. She was multifaceted. [...] But ultimately there were problems [with the film] and it ended up taking a direction that was not the one I was hoping for.
‘With risk there is every chance it’s going to fail. If you have to go down with that sinking ship, so be it.’
