There are trendsetters, and then there’s Twiggy. One of British culture’s original beauty influencers, model, actress and singer Dame Lesley Lawson – known professionally as Twiggy – is synonymous for popularising the Mod make-up look of the Sixties.

In contrast to vacant lips, the focus fell on wide eyes, defined with graphic liner and dramatic spiky lashes. It’s something that feels as cool today as in the tumultuous decade when it took off.

“Obviously I am very fond of that look,” Twiggy tells Harper’s Bazaar. “What a lot of people don’t know is that I invented it at the tender age of 16, pre-modelling. It would take me one and a half hours to apply including three pairs of false eyelashes!” Her bottom lashes, or ‘Twiggy lines’, as they became known, was the work of a block of pigment she applied with a paintbrush.

At the age of 72, Twiggy’s illustrious CV just keeps on growing: today she’s revealed as the face of Charlotte Tilbury’s new Pillow Talk Party line, the latest addition to the Tilbury’s hero Pillow Talk franchise.

In this exclusive video shared with Bazaar (above), Twiggy shares more on her signature beauty look with the famed make-up artist.

“I never wore lipstick, I used to put pan stick – it’s like a very thick stick of foundation – and I used to blot that on my lips,” Twiggy notes of her concealed lips.

Her pixie crop too defined the aesthetic, although at the time she didn’t want to have her hair cut so short – explaining she was too shy to tell the hairdresser different. “But thank goodness, otherwise I probably wouldn’t be sitting here now, because the haircut pulled it all together.”

Now, Twiggy’s vibe is still very much eye-centric, and she’s found her ultimate replacement to the falsies and lash paint. “The Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes! Mascara in Dream Pop is my perfect mascara,” she tells us. “It’s always in my handbag. Charlotte has created this 24-hour vertical lift effect – it’s like my Twiggy lashes in a tube!”

Naturally, her best beauty tip is lash related, too. “Heating up my eyelash curlers with a hairdryer – it’s brilliant – just be careful, make sure they’re not too hot! After, apply mascara – works every time.” If Twiggy says so, we’re sold.
