A British teenager on the party resort of Ayia Napa has made an allegation of rape, police in Cyprus have said.

The 19-year-old was allegedly gang raped by a group of men while she was in the resort town.

Twelve Israelis have been detained following the rape claim, while a police source said it is still early in the investigation and it is unclear how many of the suspects are implicated in the case.

The official could not say how the suspects knew the woman or whether they had been staying in Ayia Napa as a group.

It is believed the suspects will appear in a Famagusta district court later today for a custody hearing.

Ayia Napa is popular with younger tourists for its pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife.

Around a million Brits visit Cyprus every year and Foreign Office travel advice states that most visits are trouble-free.

However, the advice states that sexual assaults are “infrequent” but do occur, and recommends female travellers be “particularly watchful” for spiked drinks and the use of ‘date rape’ drugs.
