Thanks to the success of Normal People and I May Destroy You, the BBC is on a winning streak when it comes to airing must-watch dramas during lockdown. This looks set to continue, thanks to new drama Mrs America hitting screens next week.

The BBC Two limited series – which was originally shown on US streaming site Hulu – stars Cate Blanchlett as its main protagonist: Phyllis Schlafly, a conservative lawyer who led the rebellion against the women's liberation movement in the 1970s.

What's Mrs America about?

Mrs America is based on the real-life events that occurred during the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in the US in the 70s – through the eyes of notable women who were there.

Schlafly (aka 'the sweetheart of the silent majority') led an unexpected backlash to the bill, arguing that it would endanger women's rights in divorce and child custody cases. She was challenged by second-wave feminists such as Gloria Steinem and Betty Friedan.

The series explores how the cultural wars of the 70s gave rise to the 'Moral Majority', shifting the political landscape forever.

Who is in Mrs America?

Cate Blanchlett plays Schlafly - a conservative grass-roots organiser and lawyer, campaigned against abortion rights, feminism and the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in her lifetime.

She had six children and always thanked her wealthy attorney husband Phil (played by John Slattery) at the start of every speech.

Rose Byrne plays second-wave feminist and author Gloria Steinhem, who was one of the main faces of the feminist movement in the '60s and '70s and opposed Schlafly's cause, alongside activist and author of The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan, played by Tracey Ullman.
