With three Olympic gold medals as well as several European, Commonwealth and World Championships under his belt, Adam Peaty is one of the fastest, most celebrated swimmers in the history of the sport. In a recent video on his YouTube channel, the record-breaking British athlete shared what an average day looks like while training with his team in Tenerife.

The day consists of three separate workouts, starting with a swimming session which is all about building up the necessary endurance, without compromising on speed. "I feel a bit depleted," he says afterwards. "It was a really good set in terms of speed because of what we've been doing at the start of the week, just carrying that through. It's Friday now, so it's getting a bit of cumulative fatigue. Your muscles don't fire like they do at the start of the week."

After fuelling up on protein at lunch with scrambled egg, fried egg, and oatmeal, Peaty hits the gym. In addition to targeting his shoulders with the dumbbell bench press, he also gets in a full-body workout with deadlifts, pull-ups, cable rows, cable pulldowns, crunches and leg extensions. He then immediately heads back to the pool to finish off his day with some active recovery in the form of a 3km swim.

"Today was really good actually, I feel a little bit better now I've come out of the other side," he says. "I've done a little bit of recovery, and feel recovered actually, so that's good. I feel ready to hit the technical aspect tomorrow of the breaststroke, more about pressing where I need to press and getting some time in, just to make sure that the fatigue doesn't effect our technique too much... I've done this a lot of times, and I know where I need to press next week and where I need to attack."
