'I Tried Fenty's New Body Sauce for a Post-Holiday Style Glow - Here's My Review'

Since hitting the scene in 2017, Fenty Beauty has tasked itself with raising the bar when it comes to shade inclusivity. The brand launched with a groundbreaking range of foundation shades followed up with a line of bronzers whose colour palette went far beyond the usual 'light' and 'medium' tones.

As to the latest development from Rihanna's beauty brand? Introducing people with darker skin to the wonders of a tan-style effect, with the release of their Body Sauce Body Luminizing Tint. The offering, naturally, spans the shade spectrum, with deeper tones through to lighter ones up for grabs.

What is Fenty Beauty Body Sauce Body Luminizing Tint?

Described as: 'a subtle, everyday luminizing tint for your body with a silky texture and transfer-resistant formula', body sauce is basically a tinted moisturiser or light foundation for your body that washes off at the end of the day: an easy, breezy introduction to a tan-effect that doesn’t leave discoloured patches when it starts to fade. While it offers a sunkissed glow, this is not a fake tan product as such – you can think of it as body make-up that offers a post-holiday vibe. The aim is to enhance your skin, rather than changing its colour.

What is the benefit of Fenty Beauty Body Sauce Body Luminizing Tint?

Now, I wear a post-holiday tan like a badge of honour, so replicating one without spending any money on a trip to the tropics (which, let's face it, isn't exactly likely anytime soon) sounds amazing. But, can I really fake two weeks in Barbados (sigh) with the squeeze of a bottle? According to Amanda Harrington – whose namesake brand is one of the few that makes tanning products geared at all skin shades – the results of tan-effect products won't be as dramatic on darker skin tones as they are on lighter ones.

However, being on the deeper end of the shade spectrum doesn’t exclude you from reaping their benefits. Rather than trying to tan to change your skin's colour, she says: 'It’s more about skin elevation and finishing. You do this with make-up when you apply a warmer bronzer to lift the face and the skin.' Effectively, you're refining what you already have: Think no-makeup-makeup, but for your body.

How do you apply Fenty Beauty Body Sauce Body Luminizing Tint?

All makeup sits best on well-prepped skin so, as Harrington stresses, 'exfoliation is essential.' With that in mind, I sloughed down my skin using exfoliating gloves in the shower a few days before I planned to use the new drop.

To apply, the experts at Fenty advise you squirt a few dollops onto a kabuki brush and then sweep over your skin. After the best results possible, that’s exactly what I did. Be warned, it’s thick and more pigmented than it looks, so start blending as soon as you apply it. I used shade Fly Mamacita, which is number 5 out of the of the 7 available shades, and opted for two coats, to really build the coverage up.

My verdict on Fenty Beauty Body Sauce Body Luminizing Tint

When it comes to logistics, I found the product to be easy to use: It applies evenly and dries down really quickly, meaning you're not wasting time waiting to get dressed. While the brand states that the product is transfer-resistant, I didn't find that to be entirely true, so you might want to learn from my mistake and avoid wearing it alongside your favourite white top.

Despite this quibble, overall, this drop is a winner for me. It took me from pale-ish and blemished to sunkissed and blurred in two coats, while the subtle shimmer adds a really lovely, healthy glow.

Holiday vibes in a pandemic: you can't really say fairer than that.
