We tried this £2.50 shampoo for thinning hair - here’s what we thought
Lockdown hasn’t been the kindest to our hair. From being separated from our hairdressers, to those DIY colour jobs that may have gone awry, our locks may be looking and feeling a bit fragile.
And while hair loss may not be the easiest topic to talk about, the majority of us will most likely experience it in some form. In fact, the NHS has reported that 40% of women over the age of 70 will experience female-pattern baldness.
There are many factors that may cause hair to thin - the most common being genetics and hormones - but using the right shampoo can promote a healthy environment for hair to grow as strong and thick as possible.
This Pantene shampoo claims to reduce hair loss, and is currently on sale. It now costs less than a cup of coffee.
Sound too good to be true? Well, a selection of our 500-strong panel of testers tried it (and the corresponding conditioner) for over a month. The result? The majority reported a noticeable reduction in hair loss due to breakage, with less strands splitting or snapping - all for the bargain price of £2.49.
And if hair growth isn’t at the top of your priority list, testers with curly or wavy hair also experienced less frizz and extra bounce to their ends, with mirror-like shine.
The set, which features the shampoo, conditioner and hair mask, also has over 700 five-star reviews on Amazon, with one fan claiming they “will not be using anything else” on their hair.
Another even commented: “Love this product, I'm on treatment for cancer, not chemo, but I still get hair loss, not fully loose it just strands drop off, I'm usually covered in my hair but since using this I'm not getting as much hair loss so I'm really pleased”.
Proving you don’t have to spend a fortune to have a good hair day.
How we test
We recruited 500 testers with self-diagnosed mild to extreme hair loss or thinning. We gave each a shampoo and conditioner set to trial for one month. The sets claimed to tackle one of the three main hair loss concerns: anti-breakage, hair-thickening and root- or scalp-stimulation.
Testers noted differences they saw in their hair condition during the period, as well as how hair felt after each wash. The panel included women with a range of hair types, from straight to afro.
