Trainers And Checks: What Men Have Been Buying In 2017

From Esquire UK

Enclothed, the personal online styling service for men, has been crunching its data to create a snapshot of UK menswear tastes in 2017.

Analysing the buying habits of their 20,000 style-savvy customers, they discovered the following insights into what men are prioritising when it comes to their wardrobes - including the most popular brands.

Trainers came out on top as the most popular shoe type, accounting for 32% of total footwear sales this year so far. In second place was brogues (22%) and boots (21%), followed by boat shoes (16%) and derbies (9%). This contrasts with the same study last year that found brogues were the most popular shoe with 35% of sales, reflecting the open-armed embrace of sneakers across luxury brands and style tribes alike in the past 12 months.

In terms of brands, Scotch & Soda have been 2017's big winner, accounting for 20% of the company's total sales. Ted Baker and Hackett are joint second with 16%, followed by Lee Jeans (9%) and Gant (6%).

But how much are we actually spending on all of this clobber? 69% of Enclothed customers fall into the £1001-£1500 a year category, while 27% spent less (£501-£1000) and only 4% less again (£0-£500).

Trend-wise, the biggest uplift was for the checked shirt, accounting for 1 in 3 of all shirts sold in 2017, particularly in the Spring months. Sales of white shirts, unsurprisingly, have remained consistent.
