Hear that? The familiar burble in the distance? It's the unmistakeable sound of Randy Newman warming up his vocal chords for (yet) another instalment in the Toy Story franchise.

Almost 30 years since the original film reached cinemas (and five years after Toy Story 4 took everyone by surprise), Pixar announced at the Disney D23 Expo that another adventure was on the way. Fans were even given a little (emphasis on 'little') sneak peek at a still from the upcoming movie.

So while we await more information about Andy/Bonnie’s anthropomorphised plastic buddies, here’s everything you need to know about the film:

When is Toy Story 5 out?

You'll have to be patient: it’s not scheduled for release until summer 2026.

Is there a trailer for Toy Story 5?

Not really – alongside the image released by Pixar there was a short animated video featuring the old pals, but nothing more. We wouldn’t expect to see much more in the way of a trailer until the end of 2025 at the earliest.

Who is in Toy Story 5?

So far Tim Allen (Buzz Lightyear) and Blake Clarke (Slinky Dog) have been confirmed, but we’re sure that Tom Hanks (Woody), Joan Cusack (Jessie) and more surprise guest stars will be announced in due course.

What’s the plot of Toy Story 5?

According to the film’s director, Andrew Stanton, TS5 will tackle “what kids are obsessed with today: electronics”. The image released also shows what looks like a kid, under a blanket, looking at an iPad while the toys look on sadly. Hopefully the storyline will be a little more nuanced than “ooh, aren’t screens bad? If only kids would play with toys like back in the old days…”

Several people have picked up on the fact that in TS4 (*spoiler*) Woody decides to leave the gang and start a new chapter of his life with Bo Peep. One fan on X commented: “Woody shouldn’t be here let him be done. The whole 4th movie was about him being done,” while another added: “Y’all already spoiled the perfect ending with Toy Story 3 and then gave Woody a great send off in Toy Story 4. Now how is Toy Story 5 going to work lol”.
