Nine stars from The Only Way Is Essex were booted off a flight in Spain for refusing to wear face masks.

According to The Sun, the group were spoken to by police following a stop in Spain after they flew back from filming in the Dominican Republic on Tuesday.

Longtime castmember James 'Diags' Bennewith was among the group, as were new recruits Hannah Voyan, Pia Smith and Mia Sully.

An insider claimed one star was openly vaping on the flight, while others refused to wear face coverings while seated - flouting Air Europa's policy.

Police officers reported to the scene when their flight arrived in Madrid and they were refused entry onto a connecting flight to London, which was delayed by 15 minutes while their baggage was removed.

An Air Europa spokeswoman said: "There was an incident on the flight. Following protocol, several passengers were asked to leave the plane for refusing to wear the mandatory masks and one of them for smoking inside the aircraft."

Spain's Civil Guard officials added: "On the indications of the captain and to avoid any more problems nine people, consisting of four men and five women who are all British nationals, were removed from the plane and after the corresponding complaint from the captain they are now set to face a fine."

Diags told his followers in an Instagram Stories video that he was thrown off a flight "for no reason at all" and showed TOWIE stars Dan Edgar and Jordan Brook waiting in Madrid airport with him for their new flight to London.

Hannah, Pia and Mia were spotted arriving at Stansted Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
