The touching jewellery tributes worn to honour The Queen
Catherine, Princess of Wales, wore a necklace of significance gifted to her by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II to the late monarch’s funeral on Monday 19 September.
Princess Catherine paid a subtle tribute to Her Majesty by wearing a pearl choker from the Queen's personal jewellery collection along with a set of pearl drop earrings which also belonged to The Queen.
The Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker includes four rows of pearls with a curved, diamond clasp. Each side of the choker features three rows of diamonds that join at the top and bottom with marquise diamonds.
The piece, which was first loaned to Princess Catherine in 2017, carries additional meaning in that it was also worn by the Prince of Wales's mother, Princess Diana, in November 1982. The late princess wore the choker during a state visit from Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.
Catherine's Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings worn to the funeral were once part of Queen Elizabeth II’s royal collection. They feature round diamond studs, with baguette-cut diamonds and hanging pearls.
Catherine’s choice of jewellery is particularly poignant because of the gems themselves: pearls are traditionally worn during mourning.
At a ceremonial procession on Wednesday 14 September to transport the coffin of Her Majesty, The Queen from Buckingham Palace to Westminster, Princess Catherine wore another piece gifted to her by the Queen: a diamond and pearl leaf brooch, which featured a trio of pearls at the centre of a silver pave-set leaf.
Alongside with the pearl brooch, Catherine wore a pair of diamond-and-pearl drop earrings that were worn by Princess Diana many times during her life.
A number of other guests chose to wear historically or personally significant jewellery to honour the Queen at the funeral on Monday.
Camilla, the Queen Consort, is often seen wearing pearls in public, but on the day of the Queen’s funeral she wore a diamond brooch which once belonged to Queen Victoria. The unique brooch was worn by the monarch for her Diamond Jubilee.
With diamonds it also contains three sapphires and is set in the shape of a heart. Inside is the number 60, signifying the number of years in a Diamond Jubilee reign.
The item was gifted to Queen Victoria by her grandchildren to mark the historic occasion.
A week earlier, Camilla was seen wearing another jewellery tribute to Queen Elizabeth. At a service of thanksgiving on Monday 13 September, the Queen Consort wore a diamond thistle brooch in a nod to Scotland's national flower.
It was believed to be a tribute to the country where Queen Elizabeth is said to have felt most at home, and where she spent her final days.
There was some touching personal tributes among younger members of the royal family, too: Lady Louise Windsor, who is the eldest child of Prince Edward, wore a simple silver necklace with a horse pendant to the funeral. The choice of pendant is believed to symbolise Lady Louise’s shared love of horses with her late grandmother, the Queen.
Meanwhile, Princess Charlotte wore a a brooch in the shape of a horseshoe, in another sweet nod to her great-grand mother love of horses.
