Arsenal summer signing Kai Havertz has been labelled “out of touch” over his comments about Germany’s lack of support at the World Cup.

The Gunners signed Havertz from Chelsea in the summer transfer window for £65m with the 24-year-old going straight into Mikel Arteta’s side for their first four Premier League fixtures.

Havertz is now away with the German national team after Arsenal made a good start to the new Premier League season – but he’s already caused a stir ahead of their friendly with Japan tonight.

The attacker appeared in a press conference earlier this week to preview the match against Japan with attention still on their poor performances at the World Cup in the summer.

Germany crashed out in the group stage with Japan and Spain going through but Havertz turned the attention to their lack of support in Qatar for the tournament.

“Anyone should have noticed when looking back at the World Cup that we didn’t have that much support in the country,” Havertz said in a pre-match press conference.

“We were really on our own then. When you saw what other nations had for fans and support, I think that was something we were missing a bit.

“As the saying goes, the fans are the twelfth man and provide support even in bad times. We didn’t always feel it 100 percent.”

Those comments did not go down well with Bild‘s Alfred Draxler with the German journalist asking Havertz in his column: “How out of touch are you?”

Draxler points to the cost of tickets for Germany’s home match against France on Tuesday as an example of how “it’s really, really expensive” to watch the national team nowadays.

And the Bild journalist reckons Havertz should’ve said: “We know that we played really badly recently. We are sorry if we disappointed the fans. We can understand the criticism.”

Havertz has already faced criticism from Arsenal fans on social media but he’s remaining “relaxed” about his slow start to his time at the Emirates Stadium.

The Germany international spoke about the negativity around him, he said: “Sure, things like that keep you busy. But I’ve often had a phase and that you often only see the negative. It’s not the first club where I’m starting over.

“Of course, you want to be successful as quickly as possible, but I know that there are phases like that. I try to approach it in a relaxed manner.”
