Tottenham leapfrog Chelsea in race for £40m Prem attacker; player sales required before late bid
Tottenham are reportedly ‘leading the race’ to sign Nottingham Forest attacker Brennan Johnson, who is also a target for Chelsea.
The 22-year-old scored eight goals and made three assists in the Premier League last season and has been linked with a host of top clubs.
Steve Cooper is understandably desperate to keep hold of Johnson for this season, but Nottingham Forest could be forced into accepting a sizeable bid for his services.
As reported by TEAMtalk, Chelsea are considering a move for the Wales international after missing out on Michael Olise, who has now signed a new contract with Crystal Palace.
West Ham have also enquired about Johnson in the past, but are on the verge of signing Ajax star Mohammed Kudus instead.
Tottenham have now thrown their hat into the ring as Ange Postecoglou looks to bring in more attacking reinforcements after selling Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.
Nottingham Forest certainly won’t let their star man leave on the cheap, so Spurs will have to put their money where their mouth is to get a deal done.

Tottenham ‘lead’ Chelsea in Johnson race
According to 90Min, Tottenham are now ‘leading the race’ for Johnson, despite interest from Chelsea.
Spurs have already made eight new additions this summer as Postecoglou looks to help his team bounce back from a disappointing 2022/23 season.
However, before they can sanction any more major incomings, it’s likely Spurs need to sell players first.
Postecoglou is willing to let several players go. The likes of Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga and several others have all been heavily linked with departures this summer.
If Tottenham can sell some of those players, they may well make a late bid for Johnson.
The Welshman is versatile, with the ability to play as a winger on either flank and as an attacking midfielder. He could provide competition for the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, Heung-min Son, Ivan Perisic and James Maddison for Spurs.
Reports suggest Nottingham Forest will only entertain offers in the region of £40m for Johnson. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham make a concrete offer for the attacker in the next few days.
