Top tips for staying hydrated during the heatwave

As summer ramps up in the Northern Hemisphere, people are making the most of the sunny weather.

But whether you are sitting by the beach, enjoying afternoons outdoors, or even doing all you can to avoid the heatwave, it's very important to stay hydrated.

While it's not always possible or that exciting to drink eight glasses over the course of the day, wellness guru and nutrition expert Penny Weston has suggested that you can "eat your water" by consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables.

"Top options include cucumbers, which are 95 per cent water, tomatoes, which are a really rich source of water, watercress, where the clue is in the name, and apples, which have 85.56g of water per 100g," she explained. "Celery is mostly made of water, as is raw lettuce, which is 95 per cent water. I love watermelon too, which is 92 per cent water and a great snack for keeping hydrated. Courgettes are 90 per cent water. A surprising one is carrots, which although dense, are 90 per cent water too."

Another way to increase hydration is by snacking on watermelon and strawberries or adding pieces of chopped fruit to glasses of cool water along with some fresh mint.

"Watermelon is very healthy and one of the most hydrating foods you can eat. It also has several important nutrients, such as Vitamin C, A and magnesium, and is rich in antioxidants," the expert continued.

And while health organisations recommend people drink six to eight glasses of water each day, this is a guideline.

"Water, lower-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, including tea and coffee, all count towards your water intake as do hydrating foods. Your body still absorbs the water from these and uses them to stay hydrated," she added. "Drinking coconut water is also helpful for hydration because it's rich in water and electrolytes."
