The powers that be are really quite powerful, but their word is not gospel. Just because we're told to do something doesn't mean we'll actually do it. Take drinking in moderation, and Google Plus, and honourable dating practises– all of them vehemently refused by polite society despite the encouragement of our overlords. We still ghost and get wasted and grow increasingly accustomed to the taste of the big Zuckerberg boot. The same works in menswear, then. Leather trousers can shiver down the most vaunted of runways, and men still won't wear them en masse. The same applies to cut-outs, jumpsuits, brown suits et al.

Actually, hold up a second there. The brown suit isn't quite in the same category. For while we continually spurn left-field spoonfuls from designers like an angry toddler in a very classic, very wearable overshirt (nothing wrong with overshirts, by the way), this once maligned tailoring move isn't always picked last for the team. On the contrary, it's somewhere near the front for Tom Hiddleston, who went for a winey, claret-y brown suit at a London screening of OH MY GOD, YET ANOTHER Marvel TV series (Loki, if you were wondering, which is "actually quite good" according to Esquire writer Tom Nicholson. "I've seen the first two episodes and I've enjoyed them").

Hiddleston chose wisely. He looks great. And the 40-year-old joins a cadre of other Very Famous Men that have enlisted brown suits on the back of the ongoing Seventies redux – one of the few rowdier trends that have broken through from the top, with Gucci and Casablanca the biggest clouds behind the trickle down.

This isn't an entirely new thing either. Over the last three or four years, Ryan Gosling, Hugh Jackman and Donald Glover are but three guys to wear various iterations of the brown suit. And we'd be at fault to ignore Harry Styles. After graduating from rising star to proper blazing menswear sun, the 'Golden' boy has long endorsed brown suits with the most recent being a very Seventies, very 'afternoon cocktail at Burt Bacharach's' printed two-piece at the Brit Awards. Oh, and he also wore brown at the final Brit Awards ceremony before the world ended.

Well of course they can wear brown suits, you cry, they're mad famous. Which is correct. But Hiddleston, Jackman, Glover, Gosling and Styles aren't all cut of the same cloth. These guys run the gamut of Hollywood, and like you, and every other guy, have different tastes and different approaches to wearing a brown suit. It needn't be all bellbottomed and Soul Train, but it doesn't have to be pedestrian wedding guest either. These power players are all endorsing a tricky tailoring move, clearing up a long standing style question once and for all. And if you don't take their advice, at least consider ours: brown suits are actually pretty good.
