The couple whose wedding was gatecrashed by Tom Hanks didn't recognise him at first.

The 65-year-old actor - who has been married to fellow actor Rita Wilson since 1988 - surprised brides Diciembre and Tashia Farries when he turned up to their nuptials on the beach near Santa Monica Pier in California, and though he joined guests for pictures, the newlyweds were initially baffled to spy a stranger amongst their loved ones.

Tashia told 'Entertainment Tonight': "We had just finished our ceremony and we were gathering with our family and friends to take pictures and all of a sudden we see someone walking through the crowd and I'm like, 'Who is this guy in our pictures?'

"Then he takes his hat off and starts talking and I'm like, 'Wait, that's Tom Hanks!"

The couple praised the "humble and nice" star and noted the 'Philadelphia' actor took particular interest in the fact it was a same-sex wedding.

Tashia said: "It was interesting too because it was a same-sex wedding. At one point he asked us, 'Where's the groom?' and we told him we were the two brides and he said, 'Get out!' in such surprise/

He asked to take a picture with us. He was great with our son, complimented her wedding dress. It was amazing!"

Tashia's wife also explained the touching connection between Tom Hanks and her late brother.

Diciembre said: "After the ceremony our guests were researching Tom Hanks a little more and we found out that he actually shares the same birthday as my brother, who passed in 2017. That was for sure a sign for me. [It was] like my brother attending my wedding even though he couldn't physically be there."

The Hollywood star seems to be making quite the hobby of dropping into weddings; back in 2016, he was jogging in New York City's Central Park when he came across a couple tying the knot, and he posed for pictures with the newlyweds.
