Fans will see a new side to Tom Hanks as he reads from his first collection of fiction at the Southbank Centre’s London Literature Festival later this year.

The Oscar-winning actor will also be in conversation about his book, Uncommon Type, a collection of short stories where each one is connected by the recurring motif of a typewriter.

The book, which is published on October 17, includes stories about a woman adjusting to life after a divorce, a man immigrating to New York after escaping civil war, a billionaire and his assistant on an adventure, and a tale perhaps all too familiar to Hanks: an actor enduring a press junket.

The Royal Festival Hall appearance will be his only UK event to discuss the book. He said that it would be “a privilege to be part of a festival that features a line-up of living literary greats, and in London, a city that I find inspiring with its own rich history of storytelling.”

The event will close this year’s London Literature Festival, which also features Anne Carson, Claudia Rankine, Karl Ove Knausgard, Philip Pullman and Annie Leibovitz on its line-up.

London Literature Festival takes place from October 13 to November 1. Tom Hanks is in conversation on November 1, with tickets on sale to Southbank Centre members on August 1, and the general public on August 2; southbankcentre.co.uk
