A Burns supper is traditionally served in the evening on January 25 to mark the life and work of Scottish poet Robert Burns.

It's a tradition that is celebrated by millions of people across the world each year, with Burns Suppers in places as far flung as Australia and America.

But some Scots have admitted they're not a fan of the traditional haggis, neeps and tatties meal.

In a bid to get locals onboard with their national dish, chefs and online cooks have been creating unique recipes using haggis in a non-traditional way.

Content creator @edibleinedinburgh, proved that haggis doesn't have to just be for dinner and it doesn't have to be served with a dollop of tatties and neeps. She's shared a recipe for the perfect Burns Day brunch so you can have your haggis fix earlier in the day.

Her TikTok recipe for smashed haggis hash browns will go down a treat with the full family.

Recipe

  • Scottish Chieftain Haggis

  • Frozen Hash Browns

  • Peppercorn & Brandy Pour Over Sauce

  • 1 Scottish Egg

Method

  • Preheat your oven to 180 degrees and then cook the haggis according to instructions

  • When the haggis has 15 minutes left, pop a good handful of hash browns into the Air-fryer or oven if you don’t have one and cook for 15 minutes until golden

  • Once the haggis is finished, check carefully it’s been cooked through by slicing down the middle

  • Heat up the peppercorn sauce in a pan

  • Cut the hash browns into smaller pieces and then combine these with the haggis and sauce in a pan until well mixed through

  • Fry an egg until golden in a separate pan until the yolk is golden and then plate up the haggis mixture, placing the egg on top of this
