It might be used as a flippant excuse in the midst of a bad hangover, but having your drink spiked is no joke. Between 2015 and 2018, the number of incidents reported to the police in the UK relating to drink spiking or lacing more than doubled, showing it's a crime that's worryingly on the up.
You might insist that there's "no way" you'd ever get your drink spiked; you take all necessary precautions like watching carefully as bar staff serve you, and never leaving a drink unattended in a public place. Those are all important things to ensure you do on every night out, but a new Tik Tok video shows just how easy it could be to miss a date rape drug being placed in your drink.
In response to a comment she saw online, which questioned how a person could not notice their drink being spiked, Tik Tok user Mel (@renaissancewomanhood) filmed a video that shows exactly how. In a series of short clips, she subtly manages to drop no less than five kernels of corn (representing the date rape drug) into a glass of water. And it happens in the blink of an eye.
Seriously, look how easy it is to miss...
"I've never done that before," says Mel at the end. "It took me two minutes of practice, and I now have five kernels in the bottom of this glass."
Yup, it's scarily easy.
The methods Mel used to subtly slip corn kernels into a drink in the video included dropping one as she held out her hand to introduce herself, dropping one while handing over money, accidentally tripping, and slipping one in as she gesticulated during conversation.
In an ideal world, date rape drugs wouldn't exist full stop. But they do, and so all we can do is be aware of how subtly a drink can be laced, and try to keep an eye out to make sure it doesn't happen to ourselves or our friends. Videos like this are an important reminder of that.
