Need Jewelry Gift Advice? Start With Elsa. Horst P. Horst - Getty Images

A few months ago a friend brought small gifts for everyone at a dinner. It was no one’s birthday; this was a gesture of pure generosity. So, first, let’s normalize that. But then let’s discuss what was inside: a thumbprint-size Elsa Peretti sterling silver pillbox from Tiffany. It was the perfect dose of decadence. The conversation turned quickly to our collective need to escape, with occasional jokes about what we might stash inside our new trinkets to help us do exactly that.

And then I started to talk about Elsa.

Have you heard me talk about Elsa? When I do, I give off televangelist vibes—as you know if you have ever asked me what jewelry to buy for someone. Elsa Peretti is gospel to me, because of the strength and simplicity and timelessness of her designs. I still wear the single Bean necklace my grandparents gave me for graduation, the Circle Hook woven silk earrings I got for my 18th birthday, the three-Bean silk cord necklace I bought myself for my 30th birthday, the long Mesh earrings for my 35th, the Snake earrings that were under the tree one Christmas, the net-encased Bean pendant that arrived last summer.

When I wear them I feel a bit like Elsa: like a woman who lounges around her townhouse in a red caftan and a long Snake necklace. A woman who could see the iconic potential in the small glass jars that girls in the markets of Portofino wore around their necks. Someone who would dare propose that silver jewelry be elevated at a time when yellow gold dominated, a designer so confident in the power of line and form that she would strip her creations of stones. (Though the new 50th anniversary one-of-a-kind pieces introduce them in ways she might have adored. See: the Mesh necklace with tanzanite, the Bone cuff with pavé, the Scorpion necklace in diamonds.)

When you ask me what to give someone, I generally say start with Elsa Peretti—but the other thing I love so much about this renegade is that she was one of the first to urge us to go ahead and buy it for ourselves.
