It’s not long until the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William’s third child is due (about a month, in fact), and the world is holding its breath as to which name will be chosen for the royal newcomer.

Especially the bookies, who have been charting which names the public have been placing their bets on.

According to bookmaker Coral, one potential runner for the royal baby’s name is Alice, the name of Prince Philip’s late mother Princess Alice of Greece.

Apparently, Alice is now at 6-1 as the second favourite name, followed by Victoria at 8-1.

But the one currently at the top at 4-1 is Mary, likely in homage to Queen Mary. Otherwise known as Mary of Teck, she was married to King George V.

Whether they’ll be called Alice, Victoria or Mary, the public seem determined that the royal baby will not only be a girl, but have a traditional British name.

After all, both Prince George and Princess Charlotte have names connected to the royal family.

Prince George has an undoubtedly patriotic name in matching Saint George, but also has Prince Charles’ middle name.

While for Princess Charlotte, she might be called so as there was a Queen Charlotte in 1761, and it’s also a feminine version of Prince Charles’ name.

Bets are also on as to when the child will actually be born, with 8-1 for the day to be on the couple’s seventh wedding anniversary on 29 April, and 16-1 on the same day as the Grand National.

“We’ve taken a lot of bets this week on Alice but Mary remains top of our betting and we still think given the history behind the name in both families, it’s a hot favourite,” Coral spokesman Harry Aitkenhead told the Express.

He added: “Some punters have been requesting odds on the baby to arrive on the same day as the Grand National, perhaps hoping it can give them an extra bit of luck on their way to picking the winning horse.”
