Tens of thousands of pounds have been raised for the family of a baby girl who contracted ‘the worst case of meningitis in decades’.

Little Kia Gett has had all four of her limbs amputated during her battle with the deadly illness.

A JustGiving page started to raise money for Kia and her family has now raised more than £25,000.

The ten-month-old was first rushed to hospital in September after her dad Paul, 35, went to check on her during the night and found that her body was covered in a rash, a known symptom of meningitis.

Paramedics rushed to the scene and the baby girl had a mini cardiac arrest before she was rushed to Bradford Royal Infirmary, West Yorkshire.

Her parents Paul and Vikki were then given the devastating news that she would have to have all four of her limbs amputated.

An MRI scan showed that Kia would be deaf, blind and have 90 per cent brain damage.

The little girl’s mum had taken her to the GP a few days before as Kia was ‘not herself’, but consultants have since told the family that the GP would not have been able to detect meningitis at that time.

Kia’s aunt Terri Mitchell wrote on Facebook on 17 November: ‘Kia’s auntie Terri here. Kia has had her 4th amputation and is still fighting she’s a little sleepy after all her ops.

‘Keep praying and thankyou from the bottom of our hearts for all your well wishes and donations.’

Dad Paul’s aunt Donna said that Kia’s case was the worst the hospital had seen in 25 years, and described the suffering the family – including Kia’s siblings Kayden, eight, and Elsie, four – were going through.

She said: ‘It’s heartbreaking – Paul is a self-employed window-fitter and is still having to work two days a week because bills still need paying.

‘Kayden and Elsie are staying over at the hospital house with their mum at weekends.

‘They are struggling too.’

The JustGiving page reads: ‘Kia has a big brother and sister who are not only missing her but also their mum who has not left the hospital since she was admitted.

The family are facing a long hard road and Kia’s dad Paul is self employed. Please donate anything you can to help at least relieve some financial pressure.’

The initial target was to raise £1,000 for the family. Donations have flooded in from friends and kind strangers across the world.
