This UK Gym Is Under Fire For Fat Shaming

Most gym adverts feature unrealistically hot, toned people that we will probably never look like (even if we hope so deep down).

But one gym is under fire for taking on a totally different marketing tactic by calling its potential customers “fat and ugly”. Hmmm.

Featuring a green big foot-like monster and a garish green background, it says:

“Tired of being fat and ugly? Just be ugly” suggesting that the reader join its gym to solve the issue.

The company has reportedly said that it’s just “light-hearted fun”, but the message hasn’t gone down well amongst many.

One anti-bullying charity said that the poster is “shaming” and potentially damaging, especially among children.

Natalie Harvey from Combat Bullying told Stylist that “there is a time and a place for ads like this, especially as mental health is at an all-time high”:

“Eating disorders, mental health, body-shaming; I work with children who have attempted to take their own lives. I’d sooner see positivity and love promoted on a community’s high street.

“Yes, we need to get fit, but let’s inspire and motivate, not poke fun. Keep these ads for adults in adult-frequented places.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen slogans like this - this one’s also reportedly been found in America, provoking similar reactions.
