Having a best friend can keep your world turning - they’re there for you through the highs and the lows, just as you are for them.

They also cost a lot of money to have. Because think about it; you’re also there for them during birthdays, weddings, expensive holidays… you name it.

And the total? According to a study by TopCashback, having a life-long friendship will set you back £23,870.

Yep. And for the more budget option of a 20-year friendship, you’re spending £8,000.

During one’s lifespan of 81 years, the average Brit spends more than £4,500 on their best mates’ birthday presents.

The study, which surveyed more than 2,000 adults, also found that helping a friend during a break up has its costs (£168) - because the money for that glass of red wine (three bottles) has to come from somewhere.

Buying small token gifts for them also comes at a price (£250), as a true symptom of love is to make uncontrollable impulse purchases for that other person, right?

The good news is that when people were asked to compare their friendship to the monetary investment, only 14% thought their friendship was equal to it, with the vast majority thinking it was worth more.

The majority of us (54%) have up to three BFFs, so we could be spending up to £71,610 to maintain these life-long friendships.
