This Is How Much Being Single Costs You Per Year

As we all know, being single usually doesn’t mean being alone and, now that we can find ourselves someone to ‘go for a drink with’ in two swipes, it’s not too much of a slog either.

But when it comes to spending, you’d probably imagine that all those couples holidays and fancy meals out are more expensive than a few G & Ts or a new outfit. Not so, apparently.

A survey has found that singletons spend £5,772 more per year than their coupled-up counterparts.

Voucher Codes Pro polled 2125 18-30s in the UK, half of which were single and half of which had been with a partner for at least two years. Results showed that the single group spent £150 of disposable income every week, while the loved-up group spent just £39.

If you don’t believe what you’re reading (we didn’t at first), the results also broke down how the money is spent. The main expenditures cited by singles were nights out, takeaways and meals out. In fact, those not in a relationship spent £45 per week on booze, compared to just £17 spent by bfs and gfs.

Those polled also gave their opinions on the causes of the spending gap, with 62% blaming “going out more”, a quarter claiming that there’s less pressure on people in relationships to look good and 14% suggesting it was due to split bills.

Either way, as far as we’re concerned this isn’t necessarily a great sell for coupled-up life. Wine? Pizza? Dinner with mates? Yes please.
