There's a special reason why Kate Middleton takes her children's portraits
When it comes to royal hobbies, Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, is known to be a fan of gardening and photography (as opposed to Prince William, who is ultra passionate about football these days). The Duchess even launched a nationwide project calling for the general public to share their photos of life during lockdown.
Taking family portraits is something that Kate evidently is a natural at too, as evidenced by all the intimate moments she's been able to capture of her children and share with us over the years. But it's thought that there's more to her desire to be behind the camera than simply feeling snap happy – and it's all to do with wanting more privacy.
William and Kate have their own special trick to avoid photographers getting 'good' shots of them while out and about, and the Duke (along with his brother, Harry) has spoken openly about how difficult it can be balancing your private life with the interest from the paparazzi.
Regular royal photographer, Tim Rooke, echoed these sentiments while speaking to news.com.au, describing the "younger royals as a little stand-offish with photographers" citing Princess Diana's death is part of the reason why. "What happened with their mother has obviously affected their relationship with the press."
Luckily, according to another royal expert, Camilla Tominey, Kate's solution to this was to step in as royal photographer herself – a move inspired by Queen Victoria of Sweden, who has adopted a similar approach with her own family, in an effort to thwart the press.
It makes total sense too, if The Duchess is behind the camera she doesn't have to worry about her children or family feeling harassed by the clicking of photographers as they try to go about their daily lives, or enjoy special moments. This tactic definitely seems to be one that Kate has adopted long-term too, and as her preferred method of sharing important milestones from family life too. A prime example? When she took and released the first official portrait of her daughter Princess Charlotte, back in 2015.
Since then, Kate has regularly snapped and shared candid portraits of her children, husband and father-in-law, Prince Charles, on notable occasions, such as their birthdays, Father's Day or Christmas. The added bonus of her taking the shots also means that royal fans are given a more natural and realistic glimpse into the lives of the much-loved clan (who can forget little Prince Louis' messy painting photos?).
