It's been announced that Kirsten Stewart will be portraying Princess Diana in an upcoming film about the life of the late royal, the ending of her marriage and decision to leave royal life behind her.

The film, titled Spencer – which will commence production in spring 2021, according to Deadline – will be directed by Chilean director Pablo Larraín (of Jackie fame) and scripted by Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight.

The story will focus on one pivotal weekend in the early '90s, at the Queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, when Diana decides to divorce Prince Charles and plan her new life outside the Royal Family.

Spanning three days, the film will not show the late Princess' untimely death in 1997, but will instead depict the breakdown of her marriage, as she grapples with her fierce love for her children Prince William and Prince Harry, during one of her last Christmas holidays spent in the House of Windsor.

"We decided to get into a story about identity, and around how a woman decides somehow, not to be the Queen," Larraín told Deadline, revealing that he's "always been intrigued and fascinated" by the role of the royal family within today's society, and the mysterious aura surrounding Diana, who still influences generations of women today.

"She’s a woman who, in the journey of the movie, decides and realises that she wants to be the woman she was before she met Charles," he added, explaining that his decision to place Stewart in the lead role was down to her own air of mystery, and her ability to be "very fragile and ultimately strong as well".

"To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery," he says, justifying his casting choice as a filmmaker: "When you have someone who can hold such a weight, dramatic and narrative weight just with her eyes, then you have the strong lead who can deliver what we are looking for."

While we sadly wait an entire year for production on this to start, you can get your Princess Diana fix sooner than that in the much-anticipated fourth series of The Crown, where the late royal will be shown on screen for the first time.

Release date for the latest instalment is TBC at the moment, but with filming reportedly wrapping in February 2020, fingers crossed we won't have to wait too long!
