The Relationship DNA Test: How Compatible Are You?

Saliva test offers to reveal how genetically, biologically and psychologically compatible you and your partner really are, would you take it?

Think you're made for each other? You might want to take a DNA test for that.

Because when it comes to human compatibility, it's a lot more complicated than simply finding out that the hot person you spotted in a bar, who asked you out on a date, is loads of fun and you want to be with them forever.

Instant Chemistry offers to analyse the genetic and psychological make up of you and your partner to find out how compatible you really are, from how your immune systems work to how your long term emotional behaviour choices will effect your relationship in the future.

Be afraid.

Much like a standard DNA test for say, paternity, the kit works by sending off a sample of your spit to be analysed.

On its website, Instant Chemistry explains that your genetic and biological compatibility can be measured, as well as your Human Leukocyte Antigen Systems and Serotonin Transporter Genes (no, us neither). A questionnaire will also be used to look into your psychological chemistry too.

All of these influence how likely your relationship is to go the distance.

It certainly all sounds a lot more complex than just hooking up with someone because you liked the look of them.

In its blog, the company says it's helping couples to stay together: "With the rise of social media and hundreds of cool new social, mobile dating apps, relationships are constantly put to the test.

"In order for your relationship to survive in this modern day world, you need to have a strong foundation. It’s important for couples to understand and appreciate the dynamics of their relationship in order to appreciate its value and whether to make an investment into its success.

"A big reason for relationship breakdown is a lack of understanding and communication between couples."

IC goes on to suggest that the 'couple's chemistry kit', can give you 'valuable insights' into the most important areas of your relationship to help you understand where they might need to focus.

Frankly, we're not sure what good can come out of this. Either it'll tell you that yes, you are indeed made for each other, or it will plant the seed of doubt...

But there is some scientific-sounding evidence to back up the scheme.

Apparently, some of the genes in your immune system that will be classified in the Instant Chemistry process belong to the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) system.

Three of these genes, HLA-A, HLA-B and HLA-DRB1, play an important role in biological compatibility.

They help identify foreign entities in our bodies, such as bacteria causing infections, and also contribute to creating our unique body scent.

Research shows that we subconsciously detect how similar or different another person’s immune system is from our own through their body scent, and that these instinctual preferences strongly affect human sexual attraction and help us chose our romantic partners.

If you're concerned that your DNA might prove to be incompatible with your partner's, fear not. It seems that most couples who've taken the test get something between 60 and 80 per cent compatibility scores.

And the company is quick to point out that even if you aren't compatible on everything, that's what makes every relationship so unique.

We kinda want to give it a go...
