They’re loving it: Famous fast food fans

Even celebrities can't resist the lure of Nando's peri-peri chicken

You’re not the only one who loves a cheeky Nando’s. Celebrities the world over are partial to a bit of peri-peri chicken and spicy rice – and some are more evangelical about it than others.

Transgender activist Hannah Graf has revealed that her husband, film-maker and actor Jake, has such a deep love for the South African food chain he wants to spend his last moments on earth there.

“Jake, being the classy man he is, he loves a Nando's,” she told Kate Thornton on White Wine Question Time this week. “We were literally in a Nando's one day… I think you said I love Nando's so much I want to die here.”

The pair joked about how they sometimes fantasise about dying together outside Nando’s. “You would drag me out of the burning Nando’s,” Jake said to wife Hannah on the podcast. “And then you’d obviously collapse on my body and we’d die at the same time”

Hannah continued: “Jake has this vision of him lying dead on the floor. Me, on my knees, crying up to the sky, with burning Nando’s napkins floating around us.”

The South African chain restaurant – though huge in the UK with nearly 400 branches – is not as well-known in the US, with only 42 restaurants, so it’s become a cult favourite of US stars when they visit our shores.

Singer Ed Sheeran loves the chain so much he even wrote a song entitled Nando’s Skank, and is reportedly one of the handful of lucky celebs who have bagged a black High Five card, which allows the recipient free chicken for a year.

Other rumoured card holders are David Beckham, Greg James and Oprah Winfrey, and as Nando’s itself says no-one who asks for one “no matter how politely, has ever received one”.

Of course, there are other fast food chains out there and these too get a lot of love from famous types. Donald Trump is a huge McDonald’s fan and famously got one of his aides to fetch him McDonald’s when the White House burgers didn’t come up to scratch. In their book, Let Trump Be Trump, two of his former aides Corey Lewandowski and David Bossie revealed that their boss ate a lot of fast food as he travelled around the US. “On Trump Force One there were four major food groups: McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, pizza and Diet Coke,” they wrote.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg took wife Priscilla Chan to McDonald’s while on their honeymoon in Rome, forgoing all those lovely Italian delights for burger and fries, while it’s reported that both Warren Buffett and Bill Gates have a mythical McDonald’s gold card.

Athletes aren’t immune to the charms of fast food either. In his autobiography Faster Than Lightning, Usain Bolt confessed to eating 100 McNuggets at day at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. It obviously didn’t affect his performance, as he went on to win three gold medals during the championships.
