The Best UK Places For Street Food

image

The craze for street food (gourmet fast food sold in a public place from a truck or temporary stall) only seems to be getting bigger. It gives people the chance to try quality and unique dishes from independent food companies - often made using local produce - that they wouldn’t typically find in their local takeaways. Street food trucks and stalls often gather together in permanent spaces or pop-up markets, and these are the top places in the UK to find them and get stuffed…

Taste Buchanan, Glasgow

Taste Buchanan (produced with Street Dots) has taken over the food court at Buchanan Galleries shopping centre in Glasgow - turning what used to be a place to grab a poor quality baked potato or mass-produced Chinese dish into a place to eat well-flavoured, quality, gourmet fast food dishes at affordable prices. Independent food producers, who don’t typically have a permanent restaurant or shop of their own, occupy the stalls here on a roughly 8-week rotantional basis and are there 7 days per week. At the moment, the food producers include Surf Dogs and their gourmet hot dogs; Union Waffles with their generously topped waffle desserts and Nomad’s wood-fired posh pizzas. There’s even a permanent bar offering great-value cocktails.

Indian food and beer just go together like scones and jam don’t they?! This craft beer and Indian street food joint in Leeds, with one opening soon in Manchester, is the place to head if you are up North. It’s great for vegetarians too. You can order from a menu of small plates including samosas, lentil curry or Indian scrambled egg, then add on sides such as okra fries, basmati rice, Indian salads or traditional Indian flatbread. Team these culinary delights with a keg or cask craft beer, or even an Indian cocktail, and you are set for a meal from heaven.

Hawker Yard, Birmingham

This new permanent street food space to hit Birmingham’s food scene, brought to you by Brum Yum Yum, has been received briliantly. Food producers sell out of shipping containers and there’s a two-level undercover bar and seating area in the centre of the yard that’s made out of scaffolding. The space is open at weekends and producers will change each week, but they include the likes of The Cheeky Chippy who sell chips, gravy and pork scratchings served inside giant Yorkshire puddings, as well as chips topped with Tikka Marsala sauce as well as mint & yogurt dressing and Bombay Mix. Chef Shak 627′s Pork Belly & Haloumi Burgers is also a highlight.

Probably largest line-up of street food stalls in London, KERB Camden Market will not disappoint. It’s open 7 days per week and features over 35 food producers. Highlights include Ghetto Grillz’s grilled bagel melts inspired by NYC; Mac Factory’s gourmet mac ‘n’ cheese creations; Club Mexicana’s vegan tacos and the juicy 5oz steak with courgette fries from Stakehaus. Eat, drink and be merry here right next to the picturesque canal.
