It has been a surreal few days for Thanasi Kokkinakis with the Australian winning his maiden title and being sent congratulatory messages by Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.

The Adelaide-born Kokkinakis secured his first ATP Tour title on Saturday, defeating Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 6–7 (6–8), 7–6 (7–5), 6–3 to win the title in front of his home crowd.

It has been a long time coming for the 25-year-old who has struggled with injury throughout his career.

The Australian underwent shoulder surgery in 2015, suffered a fractured kneecap in 2018 and tore his pectoral muscle in 2019.

After regaining full fitness in 2021, Kokkinakis has started 2022 with a bang as he beat the likes of John Isner and Marin Cilic en route to winning the Adelaide International.

“I wouldn’t want to win my first title anywhere else,” Kokkinakis said. “To my family, friends and coaches, what a ride it’s been. You have seen me at my lowest lows and now the highest high. It’s been a serious journey. For now I am so happy.”

And the world’s best tennis players have been impressed by the “big fella” as both Federer and Djokovic sent him messages on Instagram.

“Maiden title at home big fella. Love the sound of that Thanaser. Amazing … Keep going,” Federer wrote.

Meanwhile, Djokovic said: “Congrats on your maiden title in home town, Thanasi.

“After all the hardship injuries have caused you, I am sure this feels even sweeter.

“You deserve it! Great for tennis – Good luck in Melbourne.”
