Text Invite to Black-Tie Wedding Includes Questionable Requests for Guests to Eat Elsewhere, Send Cash Gifts
One Reddit user posted screenshots of the bride and groom's requests on a popular forum dedicated to wedding critique
A bride and groom set a black-tie standard for their guests — then asked attendees to lower their expectations for the event itself.
One of the invitees posted screenshots of the couple's blast sent via text on a popular Reddit page dedicated to critiquing wedding etiquette. The hosts' message began by dubbing the wedding "The Black Tie Event of the Fall!" then continued to list some important things for guests to keep in mind for the evening.
The reception — which they declared an "adults only" affair — would offer an “open bar” with “[his and hers] batched drinks and a selection of beer and wine.” The couple would not, however, be serving dinner at their wedding, only "light snacks." In the text, the event's lack of food was spun as an opportunity for partygoers to enjoy the local cuisine.
"This would provide you and your guest with the perfect opportunity to do an elegant evening dinner in our beautiful downtown with endless options before attending the reception!" the invitation message read.

The text then reminded guests of the black-tie dress code, requesting that men dress in "sharp black suits" and women arrive in "elegant black evening gowns, chic cocktail dresses, or sophisticated pant suits."
As for gifts, the bride and groom asked that everyone arrive empty-handed — but not without something to offer.
"Please, no physical gifts as we have settled into our beautiful new home together and have everything we need," they wrote, adding, "We plan on celebrating our love with an amazing honeymoon adventure together later in the year and your monetary contribution would mean everything to us as we start to plan our lovers getaway!"
The text went on to "humbly request cash/card for our card box or scanning the QR code provided at the reception" to gift money to the newlyweds.
In an accompanying caption, the author of the Reddit post quipped, "At least buy me dinner."
The replies on the forum called out the bride and groom for a tactless approach to hosting such a fancy event.
"Why do people think it’s ok to NOT feed their guests? Especially with an open bar," shared one commenter.
Others pointed out the odd means of delivering such an update: "Being invited to a black tie event over text? And this is just a reception invitation, not the actual wedding?" wrote another Reddit user.
Many replies agreed that the bride and groom's rules and requests didn't fit the tone inherently set by the dress code.
"Folks don’t seem to understand that a black tie event is an experience, not just an excuse to look nice," one person replied. "There is luxury at a black tie event. There is no luxury here. Folks should be able to wear dressy casual for this mess. Or even work clothes."
