Enjoying something of a culinary regeneration, Tenerife leads the Canary Islands in terms of gastronomic creativity and quality. Here are some of the island’s best restaurants.

Kabuki

This is one of two Michelin-starred restaurants open to non-residents at the Ritz-Carlton Abama Hotel in Guia de Isora. Chef Ricardo Sanz fuses Japanese and Western cuisine to create delicate, exquisite dishes such as nasu kamo (fried aubergine strips with miso sauce and sesame). Try the degustación (tasting) menu.

El Rincón de Juan Carlos

A Michelin-starred family restaurant in Los Gigantes where the eponymous Juan Carlos, along with brother Jonathan, prepares superb dishes using local ingredients. A top value degustación menu includes such delights as succulent Gillardeau number three oysters with spicy coconut and galangal.

La Arena 53

Tucked away on a motorway slip road between La Orotava and Puerto de la Cruz, this beautifully restored traditional mansion with a terrace overlooking banana plantations and the ocean, is one of the island's most popular venues. Its delectable menu is amazingly good value and includes the likes of spinach ravioli in a saffron sauce with Parmesan wafer.

The best hotels in Tenerife

Kazan

Located in the heart of the island's capital city, and Tenerife's newest recipient of a Michelin star, Kazan is a superb Japanese/Nikkei fusion restaurant specialising in fresh fish and seafood. Ask for a tasting menu and include Usuzukuri and seafood tempura in the mix.

El Cine

A no-frills bar/restaurant tucked away behind the promenade in Los Cristianos, and something of a legend in its own lunchtime. The menu is small, the tables and chairs are plastic and you have to queue to get a seat. Fish and seafood is the main attraction, with fried chicken thighs for the non-fish eaters.

Otelo

Hugely popular traditional restaurant with a large open terrace overlooking the impressive Barranco Del Infierno. This is the place to come for the speciality of the area, pollo al ajillo – tender but crispy baked chicken pieces infused with garlic.
