It's that time of year again where children get dressed up as angels, shepherds, lobsters and more for their annual nativity. Or, the river... I was definitely cast as just one section of 'the river' in my reception nativity.

Anyway, this reminds us that famous people must have also taken part in nativities at some point, even royalty.

Yes, there are several pictures in the archives of both young Prince William and Harry adorned in tea-towels and dresses to step up to their all-important roles in their respective festive plays.

It's a tradition that's still going strong too as, last year, the Duke of Cambridge revealed his son Prince George played a sheep in his school nativity: "I went to my boy's nativity play. It was funny," he told some children during a visit to Salford, Manchester at the time. "He was a sheep."

So, here's William's nursery school nativity photo from 1986:

The four-year-old prince's costume is not 100% clear from this picture, but we can see a long skirt of sorts, so we're thinking shepherd or wise man.

Prince Harry was also spotted en route to his nativity in the 1980s. First there was when he was three-years-old and was kitted out in a 'red goblin' outfit for his nursery school's nativity in 1987:

Just a year later, after starting school, a four-year-old Prince Harry was back. This time, his role had been upgraded from red goblin, which we're pretty sure was not in the original nativity story, to shepherd.
