Taylor Swift took advantage of her unexpected downtime during lockdown, using it to create a surprise new album - which has had some very impressive feedback.

The singer’s eighth studio album, Folklore, has set a new Spotify record, with the highest number of first-day release streams for any female artist, with 80.6 million streams.

Folklore was also the most-streamed pop album on Apple Music in 24 hours, with 35 million streams.

She created the entire album during lockdown at home and even kept the album release a secret from her record label.

Swift collaborated with The National’s Aaron Dessner, who explained it was kept private to prevent any leaks before release.

"There was no outside influence at all," Dessner told The Independent. "In fact, nobody knew, including her label, until hours before it was launched. For someone who’s been in this glaring spotlight for 15 years, it’s really liberating to have some privacy and work on her own terms. She deserves that."

Last year, Swift was crowned 'Woman of the Decade' by Billboard, becoming the first recipient of the accolade.

While accepting her award, she made a speech in which she addressed her ongoing feud with US businessman and record executive Scooter Braun over the rights to her music.

"Thank you for a magnificent, happy, free, confused, sometimes lonely but mostly golden decade," she said. "I'm honoured to be here tonight. I feel very lucky to be with you, thank you so much."
