If anyone was born to nab a role in the long-anticipated reboot of Gossip Girl, it was Tavi Gevinson.

Long before influencers and Instagram selfies dominated fashion week, as a teen the Chicago-born actor had the Noughties fashion industry at her feet, inspiring designers like Marc Jacobs and Rodarte's Kate and Laura Mulleavy, and rubbing shoulders with A-list celebrities on the FROW thanks to her ‘more is more’ layering and astute sartorial analysis.

From Rodarte tights, a Comme des Garçons-inspired trench coat and a lace crown, to a white vintage wedding dress at NYFW, Gevinson admits she’s toned down her aesthetic in recent years, now preferring to wear 'one layer instead of five' from brands such as Iggy NYC, Alpha60, Coach and Zac Posen.

'My preferences have changed,' she tells ELLE UK during a game of ‘It’s A Mood’. 'With shopping, at least, I'm like "unless I'm absolutely sure I want something I don't want it". And if you're doubting it you're not excited and you'll find something better.'

On vintage and pre-loved designer items she notes: 'The first Prada item I bought was the lipstick skirt from the SS00 collection, that Charlotte wears in Sex and the City, and I bought it from eBay.'

Whether it's a two-piece Rodarte skirt set or a blue jumper and white printed trousers from a vintage shop in Parma, Italy, Gevinson has long been a fan of clashing prints and textures. 'It's fun to find two things in your closet that you wouldn't think of putting together and there's a new story being told,' she says.

Despite having worn designer looks from the likes of Stuart Vevers for Coach at the Met Gala and a Zac Posen pink mini dress for the Tony Awards in 2018, the star admits she’s whittled her list of must-have desert island items to just three pieces.

'I have a really good vintage Moschino - yes I know how to pronounce that - swimsuit that I'd take, that's gingham. Probably a hat - a Georgia O'Keefe baseball cap, fine - and a pair of sunglasses. I have a pair of Celine sunglasses from The RealReal that I like.'
