During the season finale of HGTV's Flipping 101 W/ Tarek El Moussa, El Moussa mentored a novice flipper as she revamped a $920,000 property into a multi-million dollar estate. While the project proved to be more stressful than most, El Moussa had some bigger things on his mind: coordinating his proposal to Selling Sunset’s Heather Rae Young.
As a refresher, the couple got engaged in July; however, footage of the proposal has stayed under wraps until now. While part of the finale episode followed El Moussa's work with his client, the other half followed his one year anniversary trip to Catalina Island with Young. The real estate agent-turned-reality star had no idea that there would be more to this trip than just celebrating their anniversary.
Prior to taking off for the island, El Moussa FaceTimed his personal assistant Alicia to help coordinate the big occasion. He had her rent the private beach on the island for the night of the engagement. He also went ring shopping with his sister, Angelique El Moussa, where he settled on an eight carat diamond.
Last but not least, he told his children, Taylor and Brayden El Moussa, who he shares with ex-wife Christina Anstead. Taylor was ecstatic after hearing the news. She also offered her dad some advice: As he explained his plans to rent out the beach to his kids, he asked them if he should dress beachy casual, as in board shorts and flip flops. Taylor was not too keen on his outfit choice. "You should wear a tuxedo… black and white," she told her dad.
Finally, it was time for takeoff. The getaway began on a boat, which Heather believed was where they'd spend the whole trip. However, El Moussa started to read a poem he wrote for her, which hinted that they’ll actually be on land for most of the trip. "Pack your bags, say goodbye to the boat. Adventure is planned, bring a light coat," El Moussa read.
In his first surprise, El Moussa took Young off-roading in order to better see the islands. El Moussa explained that they had visited the island before and had always wanted to try it.
Next on the agenda, El Moussa planned a spa day. To make it even more special, he rented out the entire spa just for them. There were even personalized Tarek and Heather towels left for them.
On the night of the proposal, they returned to the hotel to get ready before dinner. El Moussa had Young’s "glam squad" join her in her hotel room to prep her for what she still believed would just be a date night.
After the couple cleaned up, Young met El Moussa on the beach. He stood in the middle of a rose petal aisle—wearing a tuxedo as his daughter suggested. He began by reading a letter that Young had given to him after they had been dating for a month. She told him to open it on their one year anniversary—he kept his promise.
The sappy letter penned by Young expressed how lucky she was to have met him. El Moussa began to read it aloud. While it was all beautifully written, one line really hit close to home for him: “Thank you for giving me the trust to be in the kids' lives,” the letter read. "Why do you write these things?" he said, as they both start to get emotional.
After reading the letter, El Moussa relayed to Young just how much his life had changed since they met on July 4, 2019. "You’re my best friend in the world, so Heather Rae Young..." he said as he got down on one knee: "Will you marry me?'
She said yes!
As the now-fiancés celebrated, one uninvited guest did happen to crash the engagement and take a bite out of the flowers El Moussa had arranged. However, nothing could ruin the beautiful moment.
"Being with Heather in general is an adventure, and I'm just excited to spend the rest of my life with her," he said during the episode.
