The female directors who are able to make their movies are changing the film landscape, from using their films as activist vehicles (Ava DuVernay) to making us rethink the superhero genre (Patty Jenkins). Dr. Katie Bouman quickly became the black hole hero for her role as part of a team that developed an algorithm for imaging black holes – and a photo of her smiling face, which was broadcast around the world. Her reception by the public as both as a hero and a fraud illustrates that the relationship with women in STEM is still a tricky one. The good news? She and her fellow female scientists have just provided a whole new slew of female STEM role models for the next generation to admire.
