Japanese artist Tanaka Tatsuya has been ingeniously combining tiny figurines with everyday objects to create fascinating little worlds. On his Miniature Calendar website, Tanaka Tatsuya said: “Everyone must have had similar thoughts at least once. Broccoli and parsley might sometimes look like a forest, or the tree leaves floating on the surface of the water might sometimes look like little boats. I wanted to take this way of thinking and express it through photographs…it would be great if you could use it to add a little enjoyment to your everyday life.”
Before video games and the internet, there were board games, most of which were rubbish but you lusted after them anyway. 1. An annoying game with an even more annoying advert but somehow they made you want it so bad. Bed Bugs: Really, really loud and intense game. Plastic bugs jump up and down on a vibrating piece of cardboard. The sound was horrific, like being trapped in a car with a massive cicada. Mr. Pop! Another really intense game, possibly based on an Operation Yewtree e-fit. You wound up the timer and frantically assembled Mr. Pop’s face to match your chosen card, one of which featured him casually smoking a pipe. You had to finish before he sprang up, shedding his features and disappearing back into the criminal underworld.
Advertising is a part of our daily lives, it sullies our streets and seeps into our homes, manipulating, pressuring and even destructing; peddling debt, consumerism and negative body image. Street artists all over the world are stealthily fighting back with ‘subvertisng’, making spoofs or parodies of corporate and political advertisements. Their mission is to remind us that we are human beings and not consumers. So immune are we to the golden arches, the scantily clad models and the classic red and white of coca-cola, it’s likely you may have passed a subtle piece of brandalsim without even realising it. 1.

When Cate Blanchett recently told a Variety journalist that she’d had relationships with women ‘many times’ she sent the media into a frenzy over her alleged ‘lesbian past’. When Lena Denham states “I think about my best friendship – which the Marnie- Hannah friendship in Girls is based on – as like a great romance of my young life” does she also reveal an insight that goes someway to explain her position as the current day feminist icon? Without realizing it we tend to judge other women by the closeness of other women in their life, subconsciously marking them as suspicious or predatory if they don’t exhibit solidarity traits (see Angelina Jolie) and celebrating them if they do (see Jennifer Aniston). When Katy Perry allegedly tried to sabotage Taylor Swift’s arena tour, Swift responded by recruiting a collection of her famous girlfriends in a vengeance-themed Sin City style video that in turn celebrated feminine fierceness and served to feed into old stereotypes that women are inherently catty.
