Festivals really are the time to throw your beauty rulebook out the window. They’re the one place where a simple slick of mascara and a fresh blow-dry looks more out of place than donning glitter boobs and unwashed, grass-scattered hair. Who knew a penis festival existed? The Japanese Festival of the Street Phallus happens every single year at the beginning of April.Kawasaki plays host to the phallus-themed celebrations which see penis floats take to the streets. The crowds partake in genitalia-carving competitions along with buying phallus-shaped lollipops and other trinkets.Apparently, the festival originated from an old Japanese myth of a woman whose vagina was home to a demon. Said demon bit off the penises of two of her husbands. The woman was forced to enlist the help of a blacksmith who crafted a steel penis that ended up breaking the demon’s teeth.Today, the festival promotes fertility, health and happiness and is a joyful occasion that also gives all proceeds to HIV/AIDS research.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for non-stop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day.
