Chanel Cruise 2020: Virginie Viard unveils relaxed look after Lagerfeld

It's the journey that matters most to the house of Chanel, which chose a rail station as inspiration for its latest cruise collection, staged in Paris today. A train platform, installed in the heart of the Grand Palais, was a fitting backdrop for a collection seeking to recreate the glamour and excitement of leaving the city. The collection was the first to be designed without input from Karl Lagerfeld, who died in February. Created by Virginie Viard, formerly Lagerfeld’s right-hand woman and now the designer charged with taking to Chanel into a new chapter, the collection offered a loose, more relaxed aesthetic loaded with options for a woman planning her own great escape.

Karl Lagerfeld: Why the Chanel creative director was so outstanding

Plenty of words get overused, especially in the hyperbolic world of fashion, filled with hot air and air-kissing in equal measure. “Genius” and “iconic” are my main bugbears – the former should be used sparingly, about folk such as Azzedine Alaïa (a genius craftsman) or maybe Tom Ford (a genius at marketing, let's not beat about the bush). The latter should only be used if you have, say, an unfolding triptych of a medieval saint pasted onto the front of a coat: Jean Paul Gaultier, incidentally, did that in 1997. And it was, indeed, iconic.“Outstanding” is an odd word though. What does it really mean? I mean it obviously means to stand out, but in the realm of fashion, when so many designers are jostling, constantly, to make themselves heard above the bubbling masses, how does a designer achieve that? I guess it means doing something over and above the ordinary – the ordinary being to cobble together some good clothes and send them down a catwalk a few times a year.

Following Karl Lagerfeld's death, all the times the royals have worn Chanel

Having been at the helm of Chanel since 1983 until his death on Tuesday, Karl Lagerfeld has dressed everyone from A-listers to supermodels and royalty. The German-born artistic director once said of the Queen: “She is never ridiculous; she is flawless. For this job, in our day, she is perfect.”He reportedly even begged his parents to buy him his first TV set so he could watch Her Majesty’s coronation in 1953.Princess Diana dressed head-to-toe in Chanel for her first official to Paris in 1988 and owned a number of now iconic pastel skirt suits. She reportedly no longer wanted to wear accessories with the interlocking double C logo after her divorce from Prince Charles in 1996. The initials apparently reminded her of Charles and his then-lover Camilla Parker Bowles, but she did continue to wear her couture pieces.Camilla, now Duchess of Cornwall, has stayed loyal to a pair of monochrome pumps by the French fashion house for more than a decade now.But it’s not just the older generation who have worn the fashion house’s wares. The Duchess of Cambridge thrilled when she wore a tweed Chanel coat dress and burgundy enamel bag for a visit to Paris in 2017.While the Duchess of Sussex hasn’t publicly worn any of Lagerfeld’s pieces as a member of the Royal Family, the mum-to-be has been spotted carrying the Chanel ‘Gabrielle’ bag previously.Take a look at all the royals who have worn Chanel.Follow us on Instagram and Facebook for non-stop inspiration delivered fresh to your feed, every day. Scarabs, hieroglyphs and lots of precious metal: what happened when Chanel brought ancient Egypt to New York

Karl Lagerfeld graduated from king to pharaoh last week with a show staged among the ruins of the Temple of Dendur, an Egyptian shrine that was moved from the Nubian desert and now dominates a huge room at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, with views of Central Park. The temple and its setting are a mix of antique and 1970s modernism, and this is plainly what inspired Chanel’s latest Métiers d’Art show. The invitation showed gold scarab beetles and ankhs on a background of retro graffiti, giving the audience a clue to what to expect.

Chanel has announced it will no longer use exotic animal skins or fur in its collections. This means the French fashion house will stop making products with crocodile, lizard, snake and stingray skins - its use of fur was already fairly minimal. Instead, it will work on developing new sustainable materials that have a low environmental impact, though Chanel has yet to clarify exactly what this will entail.
