Tag Heuer has launched new versions of its Formula 1 watch in bright racing colours.
The sturdy chronograph now comes in green, yellow and red, colours most obviously associated with the racetrack.
Although it’s not the first time the F1 line has played with this palate – most recently a red Ayrton Senna Special Edition from 2019, and a sun-ray green Calibre 16 model in 2020 – today the trio of watches is announced as a complimentary set.
As Tag Heuer says, “they carry on the legacy of race car livery colours established in the interwar era” one that “indicated the nation of origin of the car, its driver or its team”. British Racing Green and Rosso Corsa Italiano red – plus yellow that’s been shared across counties (Belgium, Argentina, Spain) as well as teams (Renault, ATS, Lotus). The brand has long been associated with motor racing, see also its Carrera and Monaco lines.
The watches may also been seen as emblematic of a more youthful direction Tag Heuer is taking.
Since the appointment of the then-25-year-old CEO Frédéric Arnault in 2020, it has collaborated with Nintendo on a Super Mario version of its Connected smartwatch, led the way in luxury’s turn towards lab-grown diamonds with its Carrera Plasma Diamant d’Avant-Garde edition, allowed crypto payments and enabled its latest Connected Calibre E4 model to display NFTs.
The new F1 models could also been seen as part of a broader trend for playful colour in men’s watches. This year has seen brands launching dial colours across the spectrum, including ice-blue (Grand Seiko, Rolex), mint-green (Breitling) and concentric rainbow (Bell & Ross).
The new chronographs come in 43mm cases with PVD steel tachymeter bezels and stainless steel pushers at 2 o’clock and 4 o’clock. There are subtle variations across the line, for legibility – rhodium-plated indices on the red version, black indices on the green and yellow, for example.
All three versions come on complimentary coloured rubber straps, plus the motif of a chequered race flag on their casebooks.
