Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have led a heartbreaking tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore on Good Morning Britain following the news of his passing on Tuesday at the age of 100.

The show was entirely dedicated to Sir Tom, who raised over £32 million for the NHS by pledging to walk 100 laps of his garden at the beginning of the pandemic with a goal of raising £1000.

Piers said: "Captain Tom inspired us all and this morning our show is dedicated to him. From humble beginnings, the war veteran became a symbol of hope. A shining light in the darkest of times. We celebrate this remarkable man's remarkable life."

And Susanna said: "He put the great into Great Britain. Today we remember the courage and determination of a man who captured the hearts of young and old."

Sir Tom was admitted to Bedford Hospital on Sunday after struggling with breathing difficulties following a Covid-19 diagnosis. He had also been treated for pneumonia for some time.

A host of stars have paid tribute to the World War II veteran who became a national hero, including Amanda Holden, Michael Ball and Katherine Jenkins.

Michael Ball, who collaborated with Sir Tom on a charity single, called him a "hero".

His daughters Hannah and Lucy said in a statement: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore.

“We are so grateful that we were with him during the last hours of his life; Hannah, Benjie and Georgia by his bedside and Lucy on FaceTime. We spent hours chatting to him, reminiscing about our childhood and our wonderful mother. We shared laughter and tears together.

“The last year of our father’s life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of.”

Sir Tom was also knighted by the Queen for his incredible fundraising efforts.
