Susan Sarandon ignored all royal protocol last weekend when she saw the Queen at the Royal Windsor Cup polo match.

The Hollywood actress saw Her Majesty sitting front row at the event and swiftly leapt to her feet and made a beeline to meet her. While she did remember to curtsy, Sarandon did violate one major royal etiquette rule - that no one approaches the Queen without it having been agreed beforehand and without being introduced first.

All meetings with the monarchy are generally decided in advance and are highly controlled. However, as many would in a similar situation, Sarandon was excited and marched up and introduced herself.

The two shook hands and the Queen looked happy enough to have met the Thelma and Louise star. The Duke of Edinburgh, who was sat next to his wife, looked a little more unsure as to who the unexpected guest was, but shook her hand all the same.

Sarandon was joined by her son, Miles Robbins, and her assistant, Bryan Gibbs, although they remained in their seats while the actress made her introduction to the royals.
