Suranne Jones will play a gender-flipped, present-day version of Ebenezer Scrooge in upcoming holiday special Christmas Carole.

Alongside the Vigil actress, Christmas Carole also features Jo Brand and Nish Kumar as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come respectively. Rounding out the cast are Jonty Stephens and Ian Ashpitel in the roles of Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise, the ghosts of Christmas past.

A modern take on Charles Dickens' story, Christmas Carole sees Jones as Carole Mackay, a ruthless businesswoman who has made a fortune selling festive items but isn't big on Christmas spirit.

Sporting a sleek bob and power pantsuit paired with a cold and aloof demeanour, Carole fully leans into the 'Humbug!' of it all, terrifying her employers with caustic one-liners.

"Christmas is about spending money that you don't have on that cousin you secretly hate," the character says in the trailer.

She even lays the blame directly on the Victorian novelist for people loving the holidays.

"Christmas is a lie made up by American corporations and Charles Dickens!" she says.

Things, of course, will change once the protagonist receives the visit of the ghosts of past, present and future, trying to teach her the true meaning of Christmas.

"It has a modern female Scrooge, which feels fresh and different to the original story," Jones said (via RadioTimes.com).

"It has a core message of family, like the original, but the themes are contemporary. Family relationship themes are something everyone can relate to, especially at Christmas."

Christmas Carole doesn't have a release date yet, but it is expected to premiere this month on Sky.
