Seaside town Great Yarmouth is the top destination for an affordable UK break, according to new research from HomeAway.

The family rentals site looked at the most in-demand UK locations where British holidaymakers found value for money and the Norfolk resort came out on top for its average nightly price at just £23 per person – a 15% reduction on the year before.

Famed for its sandy beaches, maritime heritage and nostalgic feel, Great Yarmouth is a fantastic spot for families to head during half term and the summer months. Last year also saw its Venice-inspired boating lake return after being restored.

The research found that London was the overall top staycation spot, with an average nightly price of £72 per person. Edinburgh came second at £52 for the average night's stay.

Brits still love being by the seaside as picturesque Whitby was the third most popular location for a UK break in 2019, with the average price per night at £38 per person, followed by the Welsh harbour town of Tenby.

When it came to tracking down excellent bargains, Hayle in Cornwall, Heacham in Norfolk and Hunstanton in Norfolk were made the list thanks to their stays for under £35 per night.

After last year's heatwave brought 38.5oC temperatures and the uncertainty of Brexit pushed up demand for UK breaks, 2019 proved a top year for the staycation. Summer 2020 is likely to be another popular time for British escapes as travellers consider their carbon footprint, too.
