Eggs aren’t just for breakfast according to one dietitian, as the healthy food has been revealed as what we should be eating for dinner to help us sleep during the heatwave.

The simple food is a top natural sedative, dietitian Sharon Natoli told the Daily Mail Australia.

"Something as simple as eating eggs at dinnertime can be a natural sedative as egg whites help the body prepare for bedtime by producing melatonin – which brings on that sleepy feeling," she said.

"They are also a rich source of the amino acid typtophan, which means that they help you to sleep better for longer by telling your brain to shut down for the night."

Meanwhile, reaching for the ice cream might not be the best way to stay cool and help you sleep, according to one scientist.

Writing for The Conversation, Peter Poortvliet from the University of Queensland said our bodies generate heat while trying to digest rich foods.

"While it may seem logical that introducing something cold, like ice cream, into the stomach should help reduce temperature, its initial cooling effect is rapidly replaced by heat generated by digestive processes needed to break down the nutrients in ice cream," he says.

"Digesting calorie-rich food leads to an increase in body temperature," he adds.

As the UK continues to heat up, Britons are searching for more ways to help them sleep at night, including fans.

According to The Sleep Advisor, while having a fan does circulate air to make your room cooler and fresher, it can also circulate pollen and dust. Not great if you suffer from allergies, asthma or hay fever.

"Take a close look at your fan," it suggests. "If it’s been collecting dust on the blades, those particles are flying through the air every time you turn it on."
