Everyone's favourite shopping game show Supermarket Sweep looks set to return to our screens after a decade away.

The show's format sees three teams of two battle rush through a supermarket as they battle for prizes by using their shopping skills.

Originally hosted by Dale Winton in the UK on ITV, the show also has the teams answer pop culture questions and solve puzzles, and ends with the successful team trolley-dashing under the clock to find hidden items.

Production company FremantleMedia has now acquired the rights to the format globally with the intention of bringing back the show.

'The time is ripe to bring back this all-time favourite gameshow which has travelled with such success over the years,' said Vasha Wallace, EVP of Global Acquisitions and Development.

'Now, modern technology allows us the opportunity to update the show, making it relevant for a 21st century audience.'

The show was originally created in the US in 1965 by producer Al Howard, before the format went worldwide including in the UK, where it was known as Dale's Supermarket Sweep. The show ran here between 1993 and 2001, before being revived in 2007.

'In Supermarket Sweep, one lucky team tries for the bonus money, but on this show, there are no losers – only shoppers having a great time,' said Howard's grandson Henry.

'I'm delighted that FremantleMedia has made the exciting decision to bring back this classic game show, and I look forward to working with their talented teams around the world. In honour of Supermarket Sweep's return… I believe I'll go shopping!'

FremantleMedia has also launched new formats The Recording Studio, The Artisan, The Golden Brain, Your Song, The Noise and Restart.
